A lot of tripping comes from too much load stacked on too few circuits, not from a panel that’s truly out of capacity โ so a dedicated circuit, a subpanel, or some load balancing solves it for far less than a panel replacement. Sometimes โ but it’s worth being honest about. Most high bills come from heating and cooling, old appliances, water heating, or utility rate increases, and those aren’t electrician work. What an electrician can find and fix is a genuine fault โ a bad connection, a circuit drawing more than it should, or failing equipment quietly pulling power. If your bill jumped with no obvious change, we can check for that. If it turns out to be your HVAC or insulation, we’ll tell you straight so you’re not paying us to chase the wrong thing.
It depends on the circuit, but the trap is high-wattage appliances. A typical 15-amp kitchen or room circuit can be maxed out by just two heavy draws at once โ a space heater plus a microwave, or a hair dryer plus a toaster, can each pull around 1,500 watts. That’s why things seem fine until you turn on that second appliance and the breaker trips. The lasting fix isn’t to keep juggling what you plug in where โ it’s to give the big draws their own dedicated circuits.
As a stopgap for low-draw electronics, a good surge strip is fine. The problem is when power strips and extension cords become permanent wiring โ running high-draw appliances, daisy-chained together, because there aren’t enough outlets. That overloads the circuit behind them and the cords themselves. If you’re relying on them in several rooms, the real answer is more properly-wired outlets and circuits, not another strip.
Yes โ that’s the first thing the load check sorts out. An overload trips predictably when you run too much at once; a fault (a short, a ground fault, a loose or damaged connection) tends to trip at random, even with little running, and can come with a dead outlet or scorching.
